Lake Narracan plan to go before CouncilA strategic plan identifying development options for Lake Narracan will be considered by Council at its meeting on Monday 6 August By Latrobe City Council - 9th July 2001 - Back to News A strategic plan identifying development options for Lake Narracan will be considered by Council at its meeting on Monday 6 August.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said a private consulting firm had been commissioned by Council to undertake a strategic development plan for Lake Narracan which would assess the natural and built assets of the Lake and its surrounds, review the commercial viability of the Council owned caravan park, and identify development options including a convention centre.
The development plan is now in the final stages of preparation ready to be presented to Council in a few weeks time," Cr Jenkins said.
"Although its water surface is relatively small (just 300 ha) Lake Narracan is a significant regional recreational asset. The lake has many competitive advantages and natural attractions such as a picturesque location, excellent water skiing, sailing, camping, swimming and walking.
Lake Narracan has approximately 20,000 visitors per annum, with the majority of visitors being repeat visitors and many being children. Not only does the lake and surrounds provide citizens of Latrobe with a scenic and exciting recreational area, but Lake Narracan is a significant drawcard for visitors from further afield, particularly visitors from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It is estimated that the Lake contributes approximately $2 million annually to the local economy," Cr Jenkins said.
Cr Jenkins said, that any decision to support the strategic development plan would require the development of an implementation strategy, the support of local stakeholders and seed funding from either the State and/or Federal governments.
"Council has, as a sign of good faith, already allocated $80,000 in the capital works program to use as a basis for future funding applications. It now remains to examine the report in detail once it is presented to Council and decide upon the strategy to be undertaken once all the facts are evaluated," Cr Jenkins concluded.
