Workshops for creative volunteers

Latrobe City Council is offering a series of one-day workshops for community and non-profit organisations called Creative Volunteering - No Limits.

By Latrobe City Council - 27th January 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that the project supported those involved in community work by providing useful tools to develop and hone the skills of volunteers to aid the long term success and growth of these vital groups.

"The project is made up of six self-contained one-day workshops. The workshops focus on assisting community volunteers who may have little or no previous relevant experience to master the basics of business planning, marketing, networking, fund raising and event planning.

"Delivered by qualified tutors who have first hand experience as volunteers, participants come away armed with a workbook full of tools, strategies and solutions tailored to their own organisation," Cr Middlemiss explained.

Latrobe City’s Community Development Officer, Ms Teresa Pugliese, said that five workshops were being held at Kernot Hall, Morwell.

"The first workshop, ‘Carry out Business Planning’ to be held on 27 February, features practical instructions to create a long term action plan for your organisation. In the workshop entitled ‘Undertake Marketing’, scheduled for 2 April, participants will learn how to present their organisation in a unique and effective light, ensuring it stands out from the crowd.

"The next workshop, ‘Network with Communities’ to be held on 23 April, will cover networking skills for committee members, to ensure they know how to get the most out of their connections. A further workshop ‘Develop Funds and Resources’ to be held on 14 May, will show attendees how to put together an innovative plan to secure the necessary resources for the group.

"The final workshop ‘Plan and Program Events’ scheduled for 15 May, will give information on laying the foundations to holding a smooth, safe event," Ms Pugliese explained.

Ms Pugliese added that a sixth workshop ‘Work with Collections’ would be held at a later date yet to be confirmed.

"As well as being an ideal way of gaining and sharing skills and knowledge, these workshops are also a great way for a committee of management to say thank you to their volunteers.

It gives attendees access to a ‘Nationally Recognised Short Course’ (by completing four core and two elective modules) or individual Statements of Attainment for each workshop attended. These qualifications would look great on a resume, and give a volunteer a sense of recognition for the hard work they put into their organisation," Ms Pugliese added.

"Each workshop costs $25 per participant. Morning and afternoon tea is provided but lunch is not supplied," Ms Pugliese concluded.

For more information about the workshops, the qualifications and enrolments, please contact Teresa Pugliese, Community Development Officer at Latrobe City Council on telephone 1300 367 700.
