The Andrews Labor Government is working with local communities across Victoria to boost road safety awareness through the $1.3 million VicRoads Community Road Safety Grants Program.

Across Victoria, 57 councils, schools and not-for-profit organisations will deliver 190 programs to provide local solutions to local road safety concerns.

The projects focus on a range of initiatives including cyclist safety such as bike education at schools, pedestrian safety including ‘safer to school’ programs, motorcyclist skills training, road safety awareness and skills for newly arrived migrants.

Grants will also fund road side banners, speed advisory signs, and mobile billboards to communicate specific messages to road users at sites identified by local communities.

In the Eastern Victoria region, Latrobe City Council, RoadSafe Gippsland and Mount Evelyn Primary School received grants to boost safety in the area.

The annual community road safety grants program helps communities prevent and reduce serious harm or injury on our roads.

The Labor Government’s $1.4 billion ‘Towards Zero’ strategy aims to reduce the number of lives lost on our roads to 200 or fewer and serious injuries by 15 per cent by 2020.

Quotes Attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing

"Everyone has a role to play in reducing the number of lives lost and serious injuries on our roads and that’s why these grants at a grass roots level are so important.

"These targeted road safety projects will help to educate more road users in a range of ways that make a real difference to general awareness and safety across Eastern Victoria."
