A new Policy that would provide a framework for the dates and occasions of significance that are celebrated across the Shire each year is now open for community feedback. At its council meeting on Wednesday 1 May, council noted the Draft Dates and Occasions of Celebration and Significance Policy, which is now live for people to view and share their thoughts on via Baw Baw Connect.

Celebrate cultural diversity

This Policy would be used to review the existing dates and occasions of significance, and to determine an annual calendar of initiatives for council to support. The Policy would also further help to ensure that council is acknowledging and celebrating a variety of days with cultural significance in our community.

Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Annemarie McCabe said that she was interested to hear what the community had to say on this policy. "There are many dates and occasions of significance that hold a special spot for people within our community, and we want to ensure that the framework which council is considering hits the mark."

"And that we can continue to support the events that mean the most to our community members. As a council we want to foster as much community connection as we can and provide local opportunities for people to come together," Cr McCabe said.

Standardising celebration policy

Cr Farhat Firdous moved the motion to note the policy and said that "having this policy would create a standard approach to what days council celebrates and give clear guidance for council officers when approached by members of the community."

In 2024/25, to further support this policy, a draft Events Strategy will be developed, outlining council's objectives to encourage, support, and facilitate home-grown community and destination events as well as civic and major events.
