DrumMuster is on again

Wellington Shire Council is reminding local farmers, spraying contractors and other farm chemical users that the drumMUSTER collection period has begun.

By Wellington Shire Council - 8th May 2006 - Back to News

The Wellington Shire Council will provide a service to collect empty, cleaned, non-returnable farm chemical containers under the drumMUSTER program.

"By adopting the drumMUSTER scheme, Wellington Shire Council is showing its commitment to our environment, while at the same time providing a valuable service for rate payers," said Stuart Malcolm, Waste Management Co-ordinator with the Wellington Shire Council.

"I encourage all users of farm chemicals to make use of this service".

"Empty containers brought in must be correctly cleaned both inside and out and allowed to drain or air dry to ensure they contain no rinse water. All containers delivered will be inspected to ensure they meet the Agsafe container cleanliness standards. Containers containing chemical residue will not be accepted."

drumMUSTER’s Advisory Committee Chairman, Wayne Cornish, said Wellington Shire Council was setting an excellent example for other industries and regions around Australia by adopting drumMUSTER.

"Wellington Shire Council is one of the majority of councils who are working with drumMUSTER around the country, through the support of the Australian Local Government Association. Around 90 per cent of local councils currently support the biggest single environmental program in the country, and we couldn’t do it without them", Mr Cornish said.

"Clean containers collected by drumMUSTER are shredded or crushed and the materials used for recycling into materials such as irrigation piping and garden furniture. Most important of all, using the drumMUSTER program means farmers and other farm chemical users protect their soils, their families, their livestock and their produce from chemical residues", he said.

"The drumMUSTER scheme is funded by a levy on crop protection and animal health products sold in rigid steel and plastic non-returnable chemical containers. Chemical users pay the 4 cents per litre or kilogram levy at purchase".

"The levy pays for participating local councils to establish collection centres and process the empty, cleaned containers brought in by farmers".

drumMUSTER collection centre will be located across the shire.

9 May: Nambrok Football Ground

10 May: Gormandale Football Ground

11 May: Yarram Works Dept. Livingston Street

12 May Airly Public Hall

All collection times are between 9am and 3pm.
