Leisure Facilities In Cowes

Bass Coast Shire Council has investigated concerns about the basketball playing surface at the YMCA in Cowes.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 11th December 2009 - Back to News

Community and Economic Development Director, Patti Wenn, said the Island and District Basketball Association (IDBA) had written to Council expressing concerns about the safety of the current floor surface.

"The YMCA completed a risk assessment of the court last month," confirmed Ms Wenn.

"Council has also spoken with Basketball Victoria who assured us that the court surface does meet the Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) standards.

"There are however higher grade floors available, which would provide a greater level of comfort and safety for players."

Ms Wenn said that any upgrade to the court would need to be looked at in the context of the entire facility.

"In our Municipal Recreation Plan, which was adopted by Council in August 2009, we identified that the Cowes Leisure Centre needed to be assessed in terms of its current use and future needs.

"Obviously this study would take in the current court, including any upgrade to the surface," explained Ms Wenn.

"This study into the Leisure Centre facilities would also link into the Masterplan we are developing for the Cowes Recreation Reserve."

A request for funding to conduct the feasibility study into the Cowes Leisure Centre facilities will be part of Council’s 2010/11 budget.
