New Year'S Eve To Stay Fireworks Free In Cowes And San Remo San Remo Fireworks Fireworks will not be reinstated in Cowes or introduced in San Remo on New Year’s Eve, Bass Coast Shire Council decided at last night’s meeting. By Bass Coast - 23rd September 2013 - Back to News As an alternative, Council voted to introduce fireworks at the conclusion of the San Remo Carols event, subject to obtaining appropriate approvals.
Council also voted to support the introduction of family friendly activities for the afternoon and early evening on New Year’s Eve in both San Remo and Cowes.
Cr Bradley Drew moved the first of two motions, which supported New Year’s Eve entertainment in San Remo and the addition of fireworks to the Carols event. The motion also asked Council to consider allocating funding of $23,600 in the next budget review to provide lighting for the Norfolk Island Pine in San Remo by Easter 2014.
Cr Drew said Council had sought advice from the community, in form of a survey, and the motion reflected what the community wanted.
The motion, seconded by Cr Kimberley Brown, was carried.
Cr Andrew Phillips moved a second motion supporting the introduction of family friendly activities for New Year’s Eve in Cowes, as well as retaining 9.30pm fireworks at the Carols by the Bay event.
This motion was also seconded by Cr Kimberley Brown and passed unanimously.
The Council decision also includes reviewing all fireworks associated with New Year’s Eve activities in Bass Coast, with a report to be presented to Council in March next year, outlining the activities for 2014.
