Temporary Closure Of Dalyston-Glen Forbes Road

Bass Coast Shire Council will temporarily close a section of the Dalyston-Glen Forbes Road from Friday, 17 November 2006, due to concerns over public safety.

The road will be closed between the intersections of Dalyston-Glen Forbes Road and Bateson Road (South) and Bateson Road (North).

Council officers investigating the condition of the major pipe culverts that run beneath the Dalyston-Glen Forbes Road determined that the condition of the culverts had deteriorated more than anticipated and posed a safety risk to the public. Further investigation by a geotechnical consultant confirmed the officer’s concerns.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure, Guy Wilson-Browne said it was important to act quickly in the interest of public safety.

"The advice we received is that the condition of the culverts poses a high public safety risk," said Mr Wilson-Browne.

"While the road is closed, Bateson Road will be the alternative route for local traffic.

"All heavy vehicles will be diverted along Mill Road, Trew Road, McGrath Road and Eden Road, with the exception of the school bus," continued Mr Wilson-Browne.

"The school bus will also use Bateson Road as the alternative route."

Mr Wilson-Browne said Council would ensure that the alternative routes are clearly sign posted for motorists. He also confirmed that Emergency Services, VicRoads and the Department of Infrastructure had all been contacted regarding the road closure.

"In addition, all affected local residents in the immediate vicinity of the road closure have been informed via a letter drop," said Mr Wilson-Browne.

The road will remain closed until the emergency construction works are completed. The exact period of the road closure will be determined by the availability of materials required for the construction.

The Echo Valley culverts had been identified in Council’s 2006-2007 Capital Works Program for investigation and design. The reconstruction was scheduled to be undertaken in the following financial year.

Mr Wilson-Browne said that in light of the current situation, the $165,000 reconstruction of the culverts would now be moved into this year’s Capital Works Program.
