Ingram Welcomes Incentives For Reliable Electricity

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed moves by the Essential Services Commission (ESC) to force electricity companies to provide a more reliable and cheaper service in his electorate.

The ESC has proposed greater penalties for companies whose customers experience regular power blackouts.

Mr Ingram said the ESC’s draft decision on electricity distribution prices for the 2006-10 period follows consultation with country Victorians who were fed up with an unreliable electricity supply.

"The ESC held a public meeting in Bairnsdale in April where I highlighted the poor delivery remote communities in my electorate were experiencing.

"I am pleased with the release of the ESC’s finding that will force private companies to maintain their infrastructure and subsequently result in a more reliable supply for their customers.

"The distribution cost of electricity will be reduced and savings passed onto individual customers.

"An average TXU customer will pay around $53 less on their yearly electricity bill.

"I am disappointed that issues relating to the quality of supply, such has high/low voltage drops, has not been adequately dealt with in the ESC’s report."

Mr Ingram said the draft decision was open for comment by stakeholders until August 19, with a final decision expected in September 2005.
