Latrobe Valley Authority sustainable transition plan with Victorian government and industry collaboration recognised by councilCouncil recognizes Latrobe Valley Authority's plan, harmonising with council's goals, fostering collaboration, for community, economic, and sustainable progress. By news@gippsland - 10th August 2023 - Back to News Latrobe City Council acknowledges the release of the Latrobe Valley Authority led Latrobe Valley and Gippsland Transition Plan. As Victoria's most heavily impacted and transitioning region, council acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the Victorian government, Latrobe Valley Authority and industry partners in developing a community informed transition plan. 
The transition plan aligns with government goals, detailing 33 actions like investment, upskilling, advocacy for successful transition, establishing Latrobe City as a transition model Unified transition visionThe Latrobe Valley and Gippsland Transition Plan reflects a shared commitment to the wellbeing of community, economic growth and sustainable development, and aligns with council's Our Transition plan, a comprehensive roadmap that outlines Latrobe City's communities' collective journey towards a brighter and more sustainable future. The industry transition impacting our community is not straightforward and our community has a significant interest in the planning and implementation of changes regarding this time of industry change. Council's approach to transition focuses on supporting all impacted workers with a focus on the workforce in the energy and timber industries and reflects the key actions and performance measures of the council plan, while remaining responsive to a dynamic and ever-changing environment. Latrobe strategic transitionOur Transition plan aligns with the Victorian government's outlined goals and recommendations, however, outlines 33 key actions focused on attracting investment, upskilling to meet needs, skilled workforce promotion, understanding future job opportunities, providing business support, promoting Latrobe City and more. Many of these actions led by the council are well advanced. To support the achievement of future job growth and upskilling outlined within Our Transition plan, council calls on the government to fast track the establishment of the State Electricity Commission (SEC) in Morwell and associated renewable energy projects which will provide new jobs and industry critical in aiding in our region's transformation. Progress in education and housingCouncil looks forward to further detail in relation to the establishment of the TAFE Clean Energy Fund which will support the creation of a $5 million Clean Energy Centre at TAFE Gippsland's Morwell Campus Trade Skills Centre, to support the next generation of trades people to deliver SEC renewable energy projects. Council views this commitment to training and upskilling as critical in supporting not only transitioning industry but providing education and training pathways for our youth. We will work closely with the government to deliver on their commitment of social and affordable housing, in line with council's Interim Social Affordable Housing Policy, addressing the pressing need for affordable and accessible housing options for our community. The investment in social housing will play a crucial role in improving the living conditions and quality of life for many families in our community, and support actions focused on increasing liveability within our City. Empowering Latrobe's transitionAt the core of Our Transition plan is the recognition of the council's vital role as a catalyst for progress. As Gippsland's Regional City, council plays a critical leadership role in advocating for both public and private investment to support community aspirations. We remain dedicated to leading by example, implementing bold initiatives and transformative projects that inspire and empower our community. We are committed to being a voice for our community, ensuring the priorities and aspirations of our community are at the forefront of our work. The transition from traditional industries to new, innovative sectors is not just a necessity; it is an opportunity. It is an opportunity to redefine our city's identity, to diversify our economy, and to create a thriving community for generations to come. We remain committed to working collaboratively with the Victorian government and partners to realise the opportunities and benefits.
