Bass Coast Meets Sudan

Bass Coast Shire Council has moved to up their support for settling refugees.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th February 2007 - Back to News

The Shire, which two years ago declared itself a Refugee Welcome Zone, is now home to more than 80 Sudanese refugees.

Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin said the Council was very pleased the Sudanese community had made Bass Coast their home.

"The Sudanese bring many benefits to this Shire, including an increased understanding of other cultures.

"We would like to welcome them and offer our support.

Cr Goodwin said it was important for Council to be part of a unified approach to the issues of migration.

"The local community and particularly the Churches and agencies have worked extremely hard to welcome these people and help their families assimilate," said Cr Goodwin.

"But for Bass Coast to continue to be a successful and sustainable option for new migrants and refugees, we need to pool our resources.

Council moved a motion at last week’s meeting to initiate the formation of a Settlement Planning Committee. The Committee would include representatives from local government, mainstream services, the community and other agencies.

Council also committed to joining with other agencies and the community to lobby for support from the State and Federal Governments.

The Council’s action followed a briefing of the Council by representatives of the Department of Immigration and Gippsland Multicultural Services.

"The community have been very generous and welcoming," said Cr Goodwin.

"But we want to be able to continue to welcome migrants and refugees to our area and ensure they have an ongoing future in the area.

"To do that takes considerable resources, and all levels of Government need to ensure they are doing their part.
