Action to Assess Damage in Licola

Wellington Shire Council will be working with other agencies to assist Licola residents in the clean up of their community following flash flooding over the weekend.

By Wellington Shire Council - 27th February 2007 - Back to News

"This is a tragedy for a community that was already badly affected by bushfires," said Cr Beth Ripper, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"Council work crews were at Licola over the weekend along with emergency services and we will be continuing the clean up work and damage assessment today," said Cr Ripper.

Flash floods rushed through Licola on Friday night following intense local thunderstorms in the area. The surrounding hills were barren following recent fires adding significantly to the silt and debris carried in the flood waters.

Several homes and buildings have been badly damaged. Roads in the area have been significantly damaged and the Licola-Jamieson Road and the Target Creek Road have been closed to the public.

"Council and contractor work crews have been working on the roads since Saturday morning," said Cr Ripper.

"This is on top of repair work that has been going on in the area since the fires started in December.

"Council has also provided water tankers to assist residents in washing out buildings and to provide drinking water. We also arranged to have septic systems pumped out."

Cr Ripper and senior Council officers inspected the damage on Saturday. Council Recovery Officers and building inspectors will travel to Licola today with Department of Human Services and Lifeline representatives.

"Our goal is to identify the best form of assistance for residents as early as possible," said Cr Ripper.

The Mayor encouraged anyone wishing to assist the Licola residents to first contact the Council Recovery team on 1300 137 218.

"It is important that we match any donations with what is actually needed," said Cr Ripper.

People wishing to donate money to assist could do so through the tax deductible Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund (GERF). Donations to GERF can be made through local NAB bank branches or phone 1800 066 401.
