Council Shopping Around For Ideas On Moe Rail Precinct

The Moe Ideas Shop has opened this week providing the community with a chance to provide their own ideas for the Moe Rail Precinct Revitalisation Project.

By Latrobe City Council - 7th May 2009 - Back to News

The opening of the shopfront in Moe, at 11 George Street, follows a weekend workshop attended by 60 representatives of the Moe community and stakeholders in the Moe Rail Precinct Revitalisation Project.

The Moe Rail Precinct Revitalisation Project encompasses the area between the Anzac Street and Saviges Road roundabouts, and the Moore Street shared zone to the Albert Street roundabout.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said ideas are being sought on potential elements within the railway precinct which will be contained within the Rail Precinct Revitalisation Project.

"Thoughts on public facilities and space, transport related functions, and service provision are all being welcomed, along with any other comments and feedback the community may have in relation to this project."

Cr Price said the weekend workshops signalled the start of an extensive period of consultation to gauge the views of the community.

"Around 120 invitations were extended to representatives of community groups, people who had made a submission to the Moe Activity Centre Plan, and those who had participated in either the Search Conference or Speak Out and who had registered their interest in remaining involved in the project. Business operators from George Street properties who may be impacted by the Rail Precinct Revitalisation Project were also invited. Of the invitees, around 60 participated in the weekend workshops," Cr Price said.

"The 60 participants furnished their ideas in small groups through discussions facilitated by professional consultants and then engaged in whole room discussions and negotiations, determining what were ‘must haves’ ‘must not haves’ and ‘could haves’ by way of services, facilities, design features and any other aspect of the project.

"An after-dark walk provided attendees with a first hand experience of the precinct at night to stimulate further ideas that should be considered. The whole weekend experience set the scene for the next stage of seeking ideas from the community on the Moe Rail Precinct Revitalisation Project, which is through the Moe Ideas Shop.

"Council invites everyone from the community to drop by the Moe Ideas Shop during opening hours over the next four weeks, take a look at the display material and comment to council staff. Everyone’s ideas to date including those that came out of the weekend workshop are displayed for all to see and people can agree or disagree with what others have suggested, and make suggestions themselves.

"Everyone’s feedback will be collated into a report to assist in the design phase," Cr Price added.
