Rubbish Costs Increase

Bass Coast Shire Council was last night forced to increase the costs of rubbish disposal at its landfill and transfer stations in an effort to recoup the increased costs imposed by the State Government.

By Bass Coast - 20th May 2011 - Back to News

Council’s Acting Infrastructure Director, Felicity Sist, said the higher costs were a result of increases to the EPA landfill levy.

"Council has been absorbing the EPA levy increases for some time. Unfortunately we’re not in a position to be able to do this any longer," said Ms Sist.

"We had budgeted for annual increases in the levy, but the government chose to bring forward the 2013 costs to this year, which were well beyond what we have budgeted.

"While we have increased the costs of rubbish disposal at the transfer station by 25 per cent, our landfill disposal costs have increased by 50 per cent in the same period," explained Ms Sist.

In an effort to keep costs at transfer stations affordable, Council has increased costs more at the Grantville Landfill, which will impact more on waste contractors than residents.

"We’ve been lobbying through the Gippsland Regional Waste Management Group to ensure that a fair share of the levy is returned to the region, through improved waste technology or facilities," continued Ms Sist.

"This will help us reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and would be a better result for our community and the environment."
