Bass Coast Shire Council recently hosted a meeting of some of the key players in issues surrounding the Inverloch boat ramp. The meeting included representatives from the South Gippsland and Leongatha Angling clubs, Inverloch State Emergency Services, Parks Victoria, Gippsland Ports, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as local residents and recreational and professional fishermen.

The natural process of increasing currents combined with wind and wave action is causing sand to wash up on and around the Inverloch boat ramp as well as channels in the inlet. For the past twelve months, Council has been using different methods to address the problem of sand blocking access to the ramp. Council has been keen to ensure the ramp remains open and is safe for all users.

"The meeting was an opportunity for all stakeholders to put forth and discuss ideas and issues about the ramp," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.

The meeting heard that Gippsland Ports have applied for funding to dredge a channel from the boat ramp to the main inlet. Stakeholders also heard that Council has purchased an over-sand temporary mat as a launching alternative. The mat will be trialed at various locations throughout the summer and, if successful, may be used as an alternate ramp.

At the meeting there was general agreement that Mahers Landing should be used as a standby ramp. However it does need an upgrade, which can only be achieved through a cooperative effort between Council, NRE, Parks Victoria, Gippsland Ports, and local users.

The meeting also agreed that a smaller consultative committee of ramp users should be formed to help with the analysis of trials of the mat and to monitor what is happening at the boat ramp.
