Bin Stickers Target Recycling Offenders

New fluorescent bin stickers will target Bass Coast households that put contaminated materials into their recycling and waste bins.

Currently, about 30 percent of collected recycling is contaminated with non-recyclable materials such as plastic bags and cannot be recycled.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Waste Management Officer, Pete Roberts, said Council had previously issued warning notices placed under the lid of offending properties’ bins, but found that many were not reaching their intended recipients.

"The introduction of stickers has dramatically reduced the amount of contaminated recycling in other municipalities and we hope that it will do the same in Bass Coast.

"Orange warning stickers will now be placed over the lid of your recycling bin should it contain contaminated materials, such as plastic bags or nappies.

"After the third warning, a pink sticker will be issued and your bin will not be collected until it has been cleared of all non-recyclable materials.

"An orange sticker will also appear on your recycling or waste bin if they have not been placed out in the correct position," said Mr Roberts.

The stickers have been designed to be easy to read and understand. They specify what the problem is and how households may rectify it.

Mr Roberts says the main problem is people putting plastic bags into their recycling bins to separate products.

"While I’m sure most people think they are doing the right thing, all recycling really needs to be put into the bin loosely.

"The materials are then sorted at our recycling depot," explained Mr Roberts.

If people are unaware of what can be placed into their recycle bins they can contact Council’s Waste Management Team on 5671 2211, 5951 3311 or 1300 737 227.

Calling Bass Coast Artists And Performers

Are you a musician or performing artist, or do you produce art and craft or a regular art exhibition within the Bass Coast Shire?

Then make sure you send in an application to be a part of the 2006-2007 Art Tour Brochure.

Bass Coast Arts and Cultural Forum, in conjunction with the Bass Coast Shire Council, are producing their fifth brochure, which will be launched at the annual Art Tour Exhibition in July this year.

Council’s Arts Officer, Josephine Kent, says the brochure is becoming more and more popular each year.

"The Art Tour Brochure is so well-liked by visitors and locals because it encompasses the locations of so many of our artists and performers in one leaflet," she said.

Applications must be received no later than 21 April 2006.

For a copy of the application form and criteria please contact Arts Officer, Josephine Kent, on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311 or email j.kent@basscoast.vic.gov.au. Application forms can also be downloaded from Council’s website: www.basscoast.vic.gov.au.

Baton Returns

A replica of the baton from the 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay is visiting groups around the Bass Coast Shire.

Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, took the baton to Bass Coast Regional Health’s Community Rehabilitation Centre (CRC) this week.

The baton was also accompanied by Manchester 2002 Games pistol shooting gold and silver medalist, Linda Ryan.

The centre hosted the baton visit as part of their Games celebrations, where teams from Inverloch CRC, Garnham house and Wonthaggi CRC engaged in some friendly competition.

All teams came equipped with cheering squads, chants and loads of Commonwealth Games spirit. The athletes then progressed through a series of team and individual events including carpet bowls, target ball, goal throwing and shooting. Medals were presented on the day with an even spread between the teams. To complete the day, afternoon tea was served to all the hungry and well deserving athletes.

If you would like the baton to visit your organisation, contact Arts and Leisure Coordinator, Jenny Churchill, on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311.
