Lakes Entrance Receives Extra Shire Funding

Extra funding to assist the continued growth of Lakes Entrance will now follow the adoption of the East Gippsland Shire Council Plan and Budget.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

CEO, Steve Kozlowski, said that the Council Plan and Budget contained several initiatives for improvements to Lakes Entrance.

"It identifies significant works to improve infrastructure; planning and amenity," he said.

"The Eastern Creek drain will receive a $3.020 million boost in funding to address stormwater and flood mitigation works over the next three years.

"This is in addition to $116,000 for the nutrient stripping wetlands development that was committed in the 2005/06 year.

Mr Kozlowski said the iconic pedestrian footbridge at Cunninghame Arm would be replaced within the next three years at an estimated cost of $1.49 million.

"It is in an advanced state of deterioration and the new project will ensure that at least emergency vehicles as well as pedestrians will be able to safely use the bridge," he said.

"Significant external funding will also be sought to ensure the project proceeds.

The new budget also provides for improved car parking facilities to be established in Lakes Entrance to alleviate concerns in the central business area.

Mr Kozlowski said the current Urban Design Framework Planning for Lakes Entrance will be completed and any required new Planning controls will be included into the Planning Scheme reflecting the outcomes of the study.

He said the Shire had provided $1 million annually over the next 5 years to implement its town development program.

"Public area improvements identified in the Urban Design Plans will be provided under this program for coastal towns including Lakes Entrance," he said.

"An Urban Street scape improvement program costing $555,000 in 2007/08 will also be implemented start bringing the appearance of streets in the central area of Lakes Entrance to a common standard and thereby improve the look and amenity of the area."

Mayor, Cr Jane Rowe said that the Shire would upgrade and redefine its property at 55 Palmers Road.

"The previous Council chose to retain the property and allow for further Council and public facilities to be developed as well as possibly sell portion of the site for residential purposes," she said.

"We will finalise our plans later this year following further public consultation."

In other budget provisions the Lakes Entrance Toilet blocks at the Hummocks and the Tennis Club will be upgraded with amounts of $235,000 and $145,000 set aside respectively.
