Cowes Does The Right Thing

Bass Coast Shire Council, with support from Sustainability Victoria, has installed new recycling and rubbish bins in Cowes.

The new bins are situated in Thompson Avenue and The Esplanade. Clear signage makes it easy to ‘do the right thing’ and place plastic and glass bottles in the recycling, and other items in the rubbish.

Posters explaining what can and cannot be recycled will be on display in public toilets, shop windows and at the Cowes Cultural Centre.

Environmental Theatre Group, Our Planet Enterprises, are taking to the streets over the weekend to launch the new bins. Their funny, educational and interactive theatre show will help to explain the new system and keep everyone entertained and laughing in the process.

Recycling turns used items back into valuable goods, and reduces the amount of rubbish going to landfill. Using recycled materials also saves resources. For example, 20 aluminium cans made from recycled materials use the same amount of energy as one aluminium can made from raw materials.

The Public Place Recycling project has been funded by Sustainability Victoria, the state government Agency responsible for promoting sustainable waste, energy and water use in Victoria. Sustainability Victoria has been supporting the provision and improvement of Public Place Recycling bins across Victoria in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.
