Residents encouraged to compost leaves where possible

Wellington Shire Council is encouraging those living in residential areas to do the right thing environmentally and compost their garden leaves wherever possible instead of burning them.

Composting is a great way to break down garden debris for recycling back into the soil as an invaluable plant nutrient. Burning by contrast produces smoke which not only pollutes the atmosphere, but can cause a nuisance to neighbours.

"Autumn has always been a great time for keen gardeners, who look forward to gathering autumn leaves so that they can recycle them back into growing strong healthy plants for coming seasons," said Wellington Chief Executive Lyndon Webb.

"Whilst we may not all have award-winning gardens, we can still learn a lot through mulching and recycling because in the end, it saves us all time through retaining moisture and kerbing weed growth in our gardens."

"We understand however that sometimes the burning of leaves may be unavoidable, and remind residents that a Shire Permit to Burn is required before fires can be lit in residential areas."

Permits can be obtained from Shire Service Centres at Sale, Maffra and Yarram. For further information, call the Wellington Shire Council on 1300 366 244.
