Gippsland Rugby League

In the eyes of most, Roosters is the hottest team in the Melbourne Rugby League competition at the moment, and is unbeaten.

By Gippsland Rugby League - 12th May 2003 - Back to News

The Wildcats had opened the season with two straight wins and were favoured to provide a minimum margin against top-seeded Altona Roosters but Roosters proved far too strong on the day defeating Wildcats 56-10.

The day did not begin well for Wildcats, with captain Jared Hiriaki called to State duties, and three experienced players recalled for work commitments that aided a weak backline.

"It was certainly a forward pack match but the feeling in the camp was good. I was extremely satisfied with the teams performance taking into consideration the experience that was out there," Coach Jeff Hiriaki said.

The opening was fast and furious and the Roosters opened the scoring in the tenth minute when fullback Duran Walters burst through a thin defence in the centres. Roosters made camp in the Wildcats half, and after five-eighth Turei Collier had converted hooker Joel Turners try taking the lead 12-0.

Wildcats captain Garth Campbell showed great leadership enlivening them with positive direction offloading to fullback Peter Hall to score their only try of this half. Anthony Huxford converted giving Roosters a 12-6 lead.

The early stages of the second half was challenging for Wildcats. The absence of captain Garth Campbell and State player Jo Csik sidelined for the remainder of the match through injury that offered Roosters the opportunity for a scoring rampage.

The physical pressure from Roosters added to Wildcats demise when prop forward and acting captain Anthony Huxford caught Roosters napping, grubber kicked through a gap, and regathered to score the only try of this half 50-10.

The Roosters showed some real spark against a depleted Wildcats but not before Wildcats damaged their forward pack with Roosters "secret weapon" second row Ulupale Amitueinai leaving the field after receiving a sprained ankle. Full time siren Roosters 56-10.

Next week, Wildcats has a bye, utilising the week for rehabilitation in preparation for Round 5 as they take on Waverley Panthers at Waverley on Sunday, 25th May.

With other news, Melbourne Rugby League (MRL) Vice President, Kiri Hiriaki; club Presidents from Gippsland, Waverley & St. Kilda’s past president has gained support from the VRL Board of Commission with forming Victorian Maori Rugby League. This elite squad will be selected from current registered players from the Victorian Rugby League that will provide maori players the opportunity to gain selection to the New Zealand Maori squad at the annual tournament in Auckland late October.
