Council Approves Emergency Plan

East Gippsland Shire Councillors have approved the ‘East Gippsland Shire Council Municipal Emergency Management Plan Version 2008-1’

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 8th September 2008 - Back to News

At their meeting this week the Councillors voted unanimously to accept the plan, development of which followed the recent fire and flood events.

In June last year Council supported a comprehensive review of the East Gippsland Shire Council Municipal Emergency Management Plan to take into account newly developed guidelines that could become available as a result of the ongoing review and enhancement of State Emergency Response and Recovery arrangements.

Shire CEO Steve Kozlowski said that following the June/July 2007 floods, many of the recommendations of a flood report that followed had been implemented, including creation of a dedicated full time position of Municipal Emergency/Recover Manager.

"This Manager has been responsible for implementing a review of the Municipal Emergency Management Plan (MEMP) that has resulted in significant changes to the previous document," he said.

"Although the previous MEMP was adequate to satisfy external audit requirements in the past, it was felt that the revised plan provided a greater level of direction for Council and this will now ensure there are improvements in the way Council responds to and recovers from similar events in the future,"
