Gippsland Province Council Disbanded

The Liberal Party has been forced to disband its Gippsland Province Electorate Council following the decision by the Bracks Government to abolish Provinces in the Constitution (Parliamentary Reform) Act.

By Philip Davis - 17th February 2005 - Back to News

After gaining control of the Legislative Council (Upper House) in 2002, the Bracks Government proceeded to abolish Provinces and replace them with Regions, effective after the November 2006 election.

The Gippsland Province Electorate Council, established to provide support and advice to Member for Gippsland Province, Philip Davis, has been disbanded because there will no longer be a Gippsland Province in the lead-up to the next election.

There are currently 22 Provinces across the state, covering four Legislative Assembly (Lower House) seats, with 44 members in total.

The new electoral arrangements will involve eight Regions each comprising five members of the Legislative Council, covering 11 Legislative Assembly seats.

"This move by the Bracks Government will result in effective rural representation in Parliament being drastically reduced," Mr Davis said.

"The new electorates will be so large, they will be beyond any Member of Parliament’s ability to provide the same level of service as constituents presently expect.

"The new Eastern Victorian Region will span from East and South Gippsland, the Latrobe Valley, the Mornington Peninsula and north to Gembrook and Monbulk, and everything in between covering a total of 59,966 square kilometres.

"Each Upper House member will represent more than 440,000 constituents compared to the 145,000 they currently represent."

All elections will also be fixed four year terms.

Mr Davis said he would remain the Member for Gippsland Province until the next state election.
