Wind Farm Registry Needed

Gippsland MP Peter Hall has called on the State Government to establish a central registry of wind farm locations, so that everyone can monitor current and future wind farm developments in the State.

By Peter Hall - 16th December 2004 - Back to News

Mr Hall raised the matter in Parliament this week, asking the Minister for Energy Industries, Theo Theophanous, if such a registry could be established "given the great local community interest in wind farm developments."

Mr Hall asked the question after the Minister told a recent forum put on by the Australian Wind Energy Association that the State Government was aiming to have 1000 megawatts of installed wind power capacity by 2006.

This is despite a current capacity of only 92 megawatts.

Mr Hall asked the Minister "where all or at least some of the remaining 908 megawatts of wind towers will be located?"

Outside Parliament, Mr Hall said the Minister’s answer did not address the question.

"Even when I put a supplementary question to him, directly seeking a commitment for a central registry, he was still equivocating," Mr Hall said.

"The Government does not seem to believe this is necessary, perhaps because it would show clearly the potentially enormous spread of wind turbines and wind farms across the State."

The Nationals MP has now written formally to the Minister, asking for information about the location and nominal capacity of existing wind farms in Victoria, the location and nominal capacity of approved wind farms and also the location and nominal capacity of wind farm developments seeking planning approval.

"I have repeated my view that all of this information should be available on a central registry so that all Victorians can readily monitor the extent of wind farm developments in the State.

Mr Hall said he would continue to pursue the information from the Minister and make it available to all people.
