Cowes Deputation On Footpath Trading

Bass Coast Shire Council received a deputation on behalf of traders from Cowes, at the Council meeting on 7 March.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th March 2007 - Back to News

The traders requested that Council review the recent decision to phase out the sale of goods on footpaths in Cowes. They asked to be included in consultation to review footpath trading along with other centres throughout the Shire.

At the Council meeting on 7 February, a motion was passed that no further permits for merchandising on footpaths would be approved in Cowes after 31 May 2007. It was also agreed that a review of goods on footpath trading in other areas of Bass Coast will be undertaken over the next twelve months. In addition, Council committed to encouraging the development of footpath dining in Cowes.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin said that the traders had expressed a willingness to work with Council to resolve the situation.

"The traders have come to us, asking to work together on a solution," said Cr Goodwin.

"At this point, the motion passed in February remains, but we have made a commitment to continue a dialogue with the traders.

"While the Island Councillors were sympathetic to the issues raised by the traders, they felt that their original decision had the backing of the majority of their community," Cr Goodwin stated.

"No further decision on the situation in Cowes will occur until our meeting on 18 April."

The traders also presented a petition containing 700 signatures. Council meeting procedures requires that any petition tabled be considered at the Council meeting one month later. At that time, Council will consider the request of Cowes’ traders for further discussion on the issue of Footpath Trading permits in their area.
