Calling all budding event organisers and local young people keen to plan events for the Shire, Baw Baw Shire Council is on a recruitment drive for the Youth Voices Program, and we want YOU! The program is a great chance for local young people to develop their leadership, event and management skills, and provides an opportunity for young people to lead the planning and delivery of drug, alcohol and smoke-free events for the youth community in Baw Baw.

Youth event committee

If you're aged between 12 and 25 and you live, work or study in Baw Baw, you're invited to join council's committee to plan, organise and and deliver events such as:

  • Music events
  • Cultural events
  • Art exhibitions
  • Film festivals
  • Battle of the Bands
  • Music, songwriting and dance workshops
  • Live radio shows

Members of the committee must be willing and able to commit to monthly meetings online or face-to-face, and training will be provided.

Youth leadership initiative

Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Annemarie McCabe said the Youth Voices Program is a wonderful opportunity for local young people to learn new skills, make new friends and make a difference across Baw Baw.

"This local leadership program is a unique experience for young people who want to plan and deliver events for the community, all while in a supported environment. At council we want to engage and work with our youth in as many ways as possible, and I can't wait to hear and see all the fabulous ideas they come up with," the Mayor said.

Youth strategy implementation

The recruitment for this program closely follows the adoption of council's Youth Strategy, and Municipal Early Years Plan, both of which were endorsed by council this year. Cr McCabe said that the Youth Voices Program builds on the goals set out in the Youth Strategy. "Council's Youth Strategy was built based on the ideas and feedback from local 12 - 25-year olds, who told us that they want more opportunities to connect," she said.

Following the recruitment of the new committee, members will meet to plan a series of events across the Shire, which will be promoted throughout the year. Applicants have until Tuesday 2 April to register their interest. To find out more or to sign up, visit Youth Voices Recruitment 2024 website.
