Seeing in summer with ample water supplies

East Gippsland Water has ample drinking water supplies to meet customer demand as it heads into summer, with no water restrictions in force anywhere in the East Gippsland region.

By East Gippsland Water - 30th November 2010 - Back to News

This buoyant situation owes much to careful forward planning, with significant rain during winter and spring also benefiting the region’s water catchments.

Currently there are more than 1,520 million litres of water in the corporation’s storages. This compares favourably with the same time last year when 1,175 million litres were in storage and no restrictions were subsequently required during the summer months.

The situation has been boosted by the new storage basin and water treatment plant at Woodglen, north west of Bairnsdale, recently brought on-line to bolster supplies to some 24,000 people served by the Mitchell River water supply system.

In addition, at Omeo a new, much larger water storage is set to come into operation over summer, increasing the town’s drinking water capacity from five million to 15 million litres. Also, at Mallacoota additional groundwater bores will be up and running shortly, making it easier for East Gippsland Water to access water from the large underground aquifer and hold it in storage to meet the town’s needs year-round. The combined cost of the projects for both these communities is some $1.5 million.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "Careful preparation has helped ensure that our drinking water storages are pretty much full as we head into summer and towards the busy holiday period.

"With no water restrictions in place, customers can be confident in their use of water around the property, both in the house and garden. They can feel safe in the knowledge that we’re continuing to meet their water needs.

"Commonsense rules do still apply which means, for example, don’t hose down paved areas. Use a broom instead. Also, you can use a hand held hose at any time to wash your car and to water gardens and lawns. Just ensure that the hose is fitted with a trigger nozzle."
