Bass Coast Shire Council Community Grant recipients celebrated their success at a presentation held this week at the Kilcunda Community Hall.

There were 36 successful grant recipients in Round 1, with a total of $63,570.00 in funds allocated across the successful applications.

Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said there was a diversity of projects funded in this grant round, including ten sport and recreation applications.

"Two of these projects support new activities, especially aimed at keeping young girls and women active," Cr Crugnale said.

"These are the Bass Valley Stand Up Paddle Boarding Mums and Ladies who were granted $2,187.00 to establish stand up paddle boarding at Coronet Bay.

"The success of this group with their 'come and try' sessions has led them to extend their reach Shire-wide, with 16 July the next date on the boards. What is wonderful with this new initiative is that Inverloch's Swell Mamas has auspiced the group, and the Sister Surfing Partnership model of sharing childcare responsibilities while others surf is being used as well so everyone that turns up gets a go."

Cr Crugnale said Community Grants also funded $1,065 to the Phillip Island Football Club to help start an under 18’s Youth Girls team, with the aim of keeping young girls involved in team sport.

"With the recent announcements of the eight team Women's AFL competition, it won't belong before there is local representation at that level," Cr Crugnale said.

"Congratulations to all recipients. The networking, information and project sharing that happened formally and informally was an added bonus to connecting in groups and individuals across the municipality."

Bass Coast Community Grants 2016, Round 2 is open for applications up to Friday, 12 August, 2016. More information is available at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/grants.
