Over 100 residents and councillors from across Latrobe City convened on Wednesday evening to listen, share and discuss their aspirations for Latrobe Valley’s future.
In addition to specific projects people are already busy pursing, such as sustainable prefabricated homes, solar hot water systems, entrepreneurial incubation hubs and care homes for the elderly, residents raised a host of broader issues for further exploration.
Mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter says, "One hundred people came to the table with a positive and cooperative attitude, ready to talk about our collective future; it really was a constructive, inspiring conversation with everyone willing to listen and share.
"When people became aware that others share their opinions and ideas you could see the energy and motivation in the room lift—that is a starting point for collaboration and a cohesive vision of where we want to head.
"We have been clear with all tiers of government that our focus on broadening our economic base should not be bogged down in more research, more reports, more feasibility studies—we are leading the community to a place of action and activity and the people who came certainly had a ‘can do’ attitude.
A series of common themes emerged throughout the night.
Topics and projects raised and supported by the community, in the order ranked by the participants, included:
- Transition Centre/Co-ops model
- Aged care hub
- Improved transport and rail access
- Liveability- arts, culture, health, education, parks and gardens
- Happiness and happiness branding
- Innovation precinct/ incubation
- Education reskilling hub
- Engagement of young people
- Connection to nature
- Artist co-op
The next phase in the conversation is to put the community’s priorities in front of Jaala Pulford, Minister for Regional Development, and Wade Noonan, Minister for Energy and Resources, at a meeting later this week [Wednesday 27 July].
"This is not the end of the community’s involvement, we intend to lead and advocate for our community but their collaboration is critical to a good outcome. If last night’s event is anything to go by our community is passionate, caring and committed—and it is my honour
to represent them and their opinions to the Ministers and whoever else we need to bring on board to deliver our community’s Transition Plan."
