Fire Prevention – Don’T Risk A Fine

Bass Coast Shire Council officers will be making random inspections of properties throughout the Shire to ensure they don’t pose a fire risk.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 17th November 2006 - Back to News

"Property owners that don’t comply with Council and CFA fire prevention regulations risk a fine," says Council’s Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, Hilton Chadwick.

Mr Chadwick says property owners should:

  • Cut back grass and undergrowth so they are not higher than 75mm;
  • Remove all green waste, including tree limbs, grass clippings and prunings;
  • Remove unrestrained rubbish;
  • Remove disused excavation or waste material; and
  • Remove weeds, which are named in the brochure Common Weeds of Gippsland - Bass Coast Shire.

Mr Chadwick also advised that rural property owners with more then four hectares will need to prepare a 10 metre fire break on all property boundaries.

"However, firebreaks are not needed if the property is used for livestock grazing or growing produce (including hay) and poses no fire hazard," he said.

"Some properties may require alternative strategies for fire prevention due to established environmental values, covenants, boundary windbreak plantings, regeneration areas and native grasses.

"If this is the case, I ask the property owner to please contact me so we can discuss the most appropriate action," Mr Chadwick continued.

Council is also providing its usual free green waste disposal service in the lead up to summer.

"Household green waste can be disposed of free of charge from 4 November to 10 December 2006 at any Council Recycling and Waste Transfer Station.

"This is to help property owners clean up their land prior to fire season," he informed.

"Unfortunately weeds cannot be put in the green waste because of their potential to spread through the mulch which is sold back to the public.

"However, up to two 70 litre bags per week of household waste, including wrapped weeds, can be disposed of free of charge all year round.

"If you are transporting weeds to the tip please ensure they are bagged or have an effective cover to help stop weed seed being dispersed on roadsides," concluded Mr Chadwick.
