Insurance Council Support For Flood Claims

Flood victims at Newry in Gippsland have been assured the Insurance Council of Australia will step in to expedite the assessment of theirclaims for damages payments.

Opposition Upper House Leader, Philip Davis, met Insurance Council representatives today to press the settlement of outstanding claims for insurance payments to people who suffered property damage in the Gippsland floods. Mr Davis said he had been assured the council would liaise with several insurers that have been holding out on claims submitted by residents at Newry. While the council indicated it would endeavour to expedite finalisation of the claims, Mr Davis said he would remain vigilant to ensure this was done with minimum delay and with fairness. "I have emphasised to them the need for immediate action to remove the uncertainty that a number of Newry families are continuing to experience," he said. "Some insurance companies have not yet responded to claims because they are considering the distinction as to whether the damage was caused by storms or flooding. "The delay is unacceptable for residents who have had to vacate their homes and in some cases split up their families to find alternative accommodation. "The flood was a traumatic event that struck the Newry district with virtually no warning and made quite a number of homes uninhabitable. "The insurance companies concerned must sort out their arrangements to settle the claims and bring a quick end to the uncertainty facing these people."
