Heritage grants to restore Criterion Hotel

Wellington Shire Council has welcomed significant Heritage Victoria funding to restore the verandah at Sale’s Criterion Hotel.

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th July 2005 - Back to News

The Heritage Council has approved a $42,500 grant and an interest free loan of a further $42,500 to the owner of the Criterion Hotel for the restoration.

Heritage Victoria Place Management Architect Simon Lloyd said the funding came from the `Places at Risk’ component of the Victorian Heritage Program.

Mr Lloyd said the owner was required to start the work this month and had until March, 2006 to complete all works.

Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer, Lyndon Webb said: "The council has been pleased to hear of the funding and is looking forward to the work being completed.

"Our key concern with issues like the lack of repairs to the Criterion Hotel has always been the potential risks to the health and safety of those living in and visiting this shire."

In addition the Heritage Council has allocated a further $5000 for an investigation into the early paint scheme of the hotel, which the owner hopes to restore.

Mr Lloyd said the funding would also pay for the removal of the out-of-character upper floor windows and unsightly pipe work on the façade of the hotel.

Wellington Council’s Heritage Advisor, Anne Napier, will monitor the works to ensure they meet Heritage Victoria’s standards.

The Criterion is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is considered one of the "most impressive and intact 19th century hotel exteriors in Victoria".

"The rendered façade is notable for its unusual cement rendered ornamentation and the returning two-storey cast iron verandah is the most impressive and extensive of its kind in Eastern Victoria," Mr Lloyd said.

Portions of the paint scheme, which were recently uncovered, feature a decorative border with gum tree and hill motifs, and are thought to be extremely rare.
