A Taste of Manufacturing in Latrobe was given funding through Skills Victoria and provided a variety of industry information sessions about the manufacturing industry.

These sessions were held at GippsTAFE and on-site at selected local businesses, in an attempt to encourage, and educate members of the Latrobe City community about the manufacturing industry.

Latrobe City Council, CEO Paul Buckley says the initiative was a great chance to make locals aware of the opportunities that exist in the local industry.

"The objective of this project was to increase the profile of the local manufacturing industry as a career pathway for young people, and to support an increase in the uptake of publicly and commercially funded training opportunities within the region," Mr Buckley said.

"It is really important that members of the community were made aware of the many and varied opportunities that do exist within the manufacturing industry. Local manufacturing is an essential part of the Latrobe Valley, and its continuing self-sufficiency. The funding we received from Skills Victoria was of great assistance in providing information for those who think the manufacturing industry might be an area they wish to work in," Mr Buckley said.

Some of the businesses that participated in the program included Latrobe Valley Machining, Power Works, who hosted information sessions for the attendees, providing knowledge of the local manufacturing industry on a first hand basis.

The project was successfully completed recently, with a total of 100 young people attending the various manufacturing information sessions. Of the 100 attendees, 46 were females aged between 16 and 24.

"To see such large numbers attend these sessions was wonderful, it was also great to see an even mixture of both young males and females wanting to learn more about the manufacturing industry, and its role in the local area," Mr Buckley added.

"The outcome of the project information sessions was all about education and awareness of the local industry opportunities, we were able to get people who were previously disengaged interested in finding employment, and were also able to provide a few of those participants with pathways into apprenticeships within the manufacturing industry," Mr Buckley concluded.

GETT Centre team leader Michael Duncan said, it was hoped through the visits that students disengaged from education would re-engage in training to join the local manufacturing industry.

"Once students have had a taste of what’s available it may well encourage them to take the next step," he said.

The GETT Centre provides a wide range of training and employment services and has been very pleased to be able to work with Latrobe City and the State Government on undertaking this very successful initiative.
