Courting Fines

Bass Coast Shire Council cleared a backlog of unpaid fines before the Wonthaggi Magistrates Court last week.

Council’s Community Safety Manager, Philippa O’Halloran, said over $20,000 had been awarded from 121 cases.

"This is following up from some poor behaviour over the last few summers," said Mrs O’Halloran.

"The fines relate largely to illegal camping and having alcohol in a public place.

"We want to show offenders that we are serious about our local laws and we will follow up on any unpaid fine."

In the coming months, further groups of outstanding cases will go before the court.

"In order to make best use of the court's time, we worked with them to get these cases heard by a Judicial Registrar, rather than using the time of a Magistrate," explained Ms O’Halloran.

Over the past few years, illegal camping and alcohol in a public place have been a strong focus of the Summer Safety campaigns.

"Giving fines is only a small part of the campaign," said Mrs O’Halloran. "We have a strong education and media focus explaining to the community and visitors what our expectations are of them while they are on holidays.

"We spend a lot of time promoting and explaining our local laws.

"If people ignore these laws then we issue a fine and if these go unpaid, we follow it up."
