Community Safety Month activities

For residents of Latrobe City, activities are an important measure to try and reduce the incidence of injury, damage and death.

For residents of Latrobe City, activities are an important measure to try and reduce the incidence of injury, damage and death. For this reason, Latrobe City and local agencies, have put together a range of events which increase the importance of community connection and in turn reduce fear and harm.

Tuesday 7 October – Good Access is Good Business is being held in the Council Chamber at Traralgon Civic Centre, Kay Street Traralgon. The session aims to give local business people information to improve access for people of all abilities to their business and in their community. As the population ages these sorts of issues become very relevant in our community. Access and ability is closely aligned to safety. Wednesday 8 October is Ride To Work Day. Various businesses around Latrobe City are organising events to promote bicycle riding as transport. The more riders the safer our roads. Cycling improves our physical wellbeing, improves the environment and improves overall safety by encouraging greater consideration for sharing roads. Latrobe City will be hosting a ride to work day breakfast for participating businesses. Contact Michael Morgan, Traffic Safety Educator with Latrobe City Safety, telephone 1300 367 700.

Also starting, Wednesday 8 October, ‘Crazy Minds Creative Hands Art Exhibition’ at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, Commercial Road, Morwell. This is a partnership event to celebrate Mental Health Week in Latrobe City. Mental Health and Community Safety Promotion have a strong common bond in that being connected with others in our community, and participating in cultural, sporting or social activities is essential to our mental wellbeing. On Tuesday 14 October, the Traralgon and District Liquor Accord meet at the Traralgon RSL. This event is for licensed liquor outlets and venue operators in the Traralgon District. This group have met bi-monthly for a number of years and includes representatives from Victoria Police, Latrobe City and Liquor Licensing Victoria. The group’s objectives include safe, family-friendly venues and promoting public safety in the Traralgon entertainment precinct. For more information contact Gary Malloy at Traralgon RSL.

Wednesday 15 October is the next scheduled meeting of the Latrobe Safety Committee. This partnership between Latrobe City and local agencies which have a stake in safety in Latrobe will hold their bi-monthly meeting. Major stakeholders include Victoria Police, Latrobe Regional Hospital, Monash University, Government Departments, including Health, VicRoads, Education and community representatives. Wednesday 15 October – a Men’s Health and Wellbeing Night will be held at Traralgon Football Club rooms starting at 6.15pm with health checks. This event promises to be a great night out for men of all ages and features speakers, performers and relevant information to help men live longer and healthier. Men are twice as likely to suffer injury or trauma and die younger than their female counterparts or companions!

Friday 17 October - Community Luncheon hosted by the Latrobe Valley Drug Reference Group. This is by invitation only, supported by Youth Substance Abuse Service and Latrobe City’s One Stop Shop to forge a better understanding about Youth Substance misuse in our community. This is the first of a number of planned activities to promote prevention.

Tuesday 21 October – Morwell and District Liquor Accord meet at the Waratah Restaurant, Morwell. This event is for licensed liquor outlets and venue operators in the Morwell District. This group has reconvened after a break and includes representatives from Victoria Police, Latrobe City and Liquor Licensing Victoria. The group’s objectives include safe, family-friendly venues and promoting public safety in the Morwell, Churchill, Boolarra and Yinnar areas. Wednesday 22 October - Victorian Eastern Regional Bike Ed Finals. This is the culmination of all the winning schools from the around the Gippsland area. The two winners of this regional final will go to Ballarat for the State Finals in late December. The venue for this will be Hazelwood Power Children’s Traffic School, opposite Kernot Hall, Morwell – come along and support traffic safety for our young.
