Mcgauran Pushes For Fencing Package

Nationals Member for Gippsland Peter McGauran is calling on the State Government to provide direct grants for farmers to replace fences damaged or destroyed by the Gippsland floods.

By Peter McGauran - 4th July 2007 - Back to News

Mr McGauran said the Federal Government would fund half of the package, under existing natural disaster arrangements between the State and Federal Government.

"There are provisions already in place that guarantee the Federal Government will meet half of the costs of a recovery package for affected farmers,"
Mr McGauran said.

"The Federal Government stands ready to assist with funding, all that is needed is the Victorian Government to come forward with details of a recovery package.

"The State Government must urgently develop a proposal to provide direct assistance to small businesses and farmers to recover from these devastating floods," Mr McGauran said.

"Specifically, the Victorian Government must commit to grants for farmers to cover costs such as replacing damaged and destroyed fences.

"Under existing arrangements, the Federal Government will match the costs of this type of community recovery package on a 50-50 basis," Mr McGauran said.

Mr McGauran said many farmers had raised with him the desperate need for Government assistance to replace damaged fences, during his visits to Lindenow Flats and other parts of East Gippsland, as well as Newry, Tinamba and Maffra earlier this week.
