Concern at increased rubbish dumping
Latrobe City Council is concerned at the increased amounts of rubbish being dumped in the municipality with recent incidents at Hernes Oak and Yallourn Heights raising environmental issues.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Dale Harriman, said that retrieval of dumped rubbish added financial imposts on ratepayers.
"Using the bush as a rubbish dump not only raises environmental concerns but it has a direct impact on ratepayers in our municipality. Council spends time and money removing rubbish to ensure our rural areas remain a viable habitat for flora and fauna as well as a pleasant and clean place for residents and visitors to enjoy.
"Most concerning is the dumping of asbestos which has the potential to cause harm. Fortunately, our maintenance team has been able to remove the offending items in a safe manner and dispose of it securely," Cr Harriman said.
"We currently have CCTV cameras operating in some parts of our municipality in an effort to deter this kind of activity. We also make every effort to trace illegally dumped material to the offenders and prosecute them. We would ask the wider community to help in our efforts to stop this small-minded minority from ruining our bush by reporting any suspicious activity.
"There are some in our community who have the view that landfill fees are prohibitively high. This is not the case. The plain fact of the matter is that it ends up costing the ratepayer far more when we factor in the collection of illegally dumped material.
"There are two weekends a year where residents can dispose of many items at the transfer stations across our municipality free of charge. Many items are free of charge to dispose of at all times of the year. There really is no excuse," Cr Harriman concluded.
