Local culinary delights promoted at Taste of VictoriaAlpine Beverages and Bows Natural Ice-cream with food and wine producers from East Gippsland, Wellington, Baw Baw and Cardinia Shires to showcase and sell Gippsland products at Taste of Victoria. By Latrobe City Council - 4th April 2001 - Back to News Alpine Beverages and Bows Natural Ice-cream from Latrobe City joined with food and wine producers from East Gippsland, Wellington, Baw Baw and Cardinia Shires to showcase and sell a diverse range of Gippsland products at this year’s Taste of Victoria extravaganza. Taste of Victoria was held last weekend at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse.
Latrobe City Economic Development Officer, Leo Billington, said that with excellent weekend weather and crowds of discerning food and wine tasting visitors, Gippsland’s ten producers were kept busy promoting and selling their product.
“Each of Gippsland’s municipalities was asked to each invite two food producers to participate with over 120 food and wine exhibitors from throughout Victoria. Local products being promoted included cheese, ice-cream, wine, herbs, sauces and spices and bottled fine waters, and these are increasingly being well received throughout Victoria and interstate,” Mr Billington said.
“Gippsland tourism was also featured in conjunction with food and wine. Latrobe City's tourism development officer, Michelle Toppin was kept busy answering hundreds of enquiries about Gippsland’s tourist attractions,” Mr Billington added.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins congratulated Latrobe’s producers for participating, saying that events such as Taste of Victoria fulfilled several of Council’s economic development objectives.
“Regional Victoria is provided with an excellent opportunity to promote its food products well beyond localised boundaries through events such as Taste of Victoria, and we congratulate the Victorian Government Department of State and Regional Development on its sponsorship initiative,” Cr Jenkins said.
“An event such as this is a chance for local food and wine producers to meet their consumers and prospective customers, and talk about the products and the region in which they are produced.
“Exhibitors are required to make a significant commitment to participate in events such as this, and make extensive preparation, especially for a two-day event. Council recognises, encourages and supports local exhibitors who take on commitments such as this, as they are highlighting some of the positive attributes of the region,” Cr Jenkins added.
As an annual event, Taste of Victoria receives significant sponsorship from the Victorian Government Department of State and Regional Development plus corporate support from Coles Supermarket and the Herald Sun.
