Mayor’s Message

Contracts were signed this week by Council to receive $82,000 in Sustainable Regions Programme funding to develop a Gippsland Special Needs Transport Study.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 29th October 2004 - Back to News

The project aims to develop an integrated inter-modal transport study for Gippsland that links into national networks.

The proposal grew out of the Department of Transport and Regional Services’ (DOTARS) major planning initiative, AustLink, which is charged with drafting Australia’s first National Transport Plan: a blueprint for the 21st century.

The AusLink Green Paper generally concentrated on the major capital cities along the eastern seaboard and in the southwest of Western Australia, and bypassed the area south of the Hume Highway, ie. the Gippsland region.

This Special Needs Transport Study will place the Gippsland region on the national agenda. Of particular importance to South Gippsland is the fact that the developing port at Barry Point will be integrated into the regional and interstate transport grid plans for road, rail and sea.

The South Gippsland Shire Council initiated the submission on behalf of Gippsland Councils and in conjunction with the South East Australia Transport Study (SEATS), and will administer the project.

This is an excellent example of Council’s initiative in looking to the future development of the region and ensuring we are properly considered in State and Federal strategies that will greatly influence our future prosperity.
