Recycled asphalt products being used in roadworks such as Reconophalt and recycled glass by Latrobe City Council
Latrobe City Council uses recycled materials, including Reconophalt and recycled glass, in roadworks to support sustainability and quality. Future trials with soft plastics are planned.
Latrobe City Council is proud to be introducing recycled asphalt products on roads across the municipality. Reclaimed asphalt products have recently been used during pavement reconstruction works in Traralgon. Most of the asphalt contained 30 percent reclaimed asphalt products, diverting nearly 430 tonnes of waste from landfill. Latrobe City Council was the first Gippsland council to trial Reconophalt. This material has been used in two roundabouts on Henry Street in Traralgon this year, and during an initial trial last year in Yallourn North.

Sustainable asphalt usage
Reconophalt includes reclaimed asphalt, TonerPlas (a mix of toner cartridges and soft plastics) and recycled glass. In January, asphalt works at Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough were completed using 10 percent recycled glass and 20 percent reclaimed asphalt products.
Using recycled materials ties to council's commitment to being sustainable. As part of our council plan, in partnership with community and business, we will deliver sustainability initiatives and take actions to adapt to a changing climate.
Asphalt trial participation
Mayor of Latrobe City Council, Councillor Kellie O'Callaghan said using recycled products on our roads keeps waste out of landfill and ensures our roads are kept at a good quality. "Many different products can be used to make asphalt, some of the roads you drive on every day could contain several recycled materials. For example, in Moe, the council used crumb rubber from recycled tyres in an asphalt mix."
"Council has agreed to participate in a trial with RMIT to use an asphalt mix containing a percentage of soft plastics. These works will happen in the next financial year."
"Council will use Reconophalt in upcoming asphalt overlay works in Moore Street, Moe at the end of March. If roadworks are happening near you, you will be notified in advance and can stay up to date on council's website and social media pages." said the Mayor.
