No Minister, No Bass Coast Backflip On Renewable Energy

Bass Coast Shire Council has slammed Minister Theo Theophanous’ comments regarding the Council’s stance on renewable energy.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th August 2006 - Back to News

The Minister for Energies, Industries and Resources yesterday said he welcomed the "backflip" by the Council with its new policy supporting renewable energy.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, said the Minister should check his facts before he makes such outrageous statements.

"The Council is a long-standing supporter of renewable energy initiatives.

"We have been part of the International Cities for Climate Protection Program since 2003," Mr Bawden advised.

"As the Minister is aware, Council last week released its Local Greenhouse Action Plan, which is Milestone 3 of the CCP Program.

"This puts in place actions to reduce Council’s greenhouse emissions by 20 percent and community emissions by 10 percent by 2015."

Mr Bawden said the number of inaccuracies in the Minister’s media release were astounding.

"I think the Minister has us confused with another Council.

"The Council has never supported the "negative and extreme rhetoric of anti-wind farm lobby groups" as stated in the Minister’s media release.

"We don’t even have any anti-wind farm lobby groups," said an incredulous Mr Bawden.

"Nor, as put forward in the release, was the Wonthaggi wind farm built by "mostly local contractors".

"The Wonthaggi wind farm was built by a German contractor."

What the Council had not supported in the past, said Mr Bawden, was the State Government’s lack of community consultation about the siting of the Wonthaggi wind farm.

"After approving the siting of the Wonthaggi wind farm, the State Government recognised the landscape as being of regional significance in their Coastal Spaces report.

"So I welcome the State Government’s backflip," stated Mr Bawden.

"Their own report states that the area is visually significant for landscape features such as the Powlett River, sand dune systems and dramatic rock formations.

"They also note that the landscape is valued by the community for its open and expansive views," Mr Bawden concluded.
