Ingram Tackling European Wasps

Gippsland East Independent MP, Craig Ingram, is calling for increased resources to combat the increased numbers of European wasps in his electorate.

By Craig Ingram - 27th March 2007 - Back to News

"European wasps are an extremely aggressive and dangerous pest and as their numbers have increased across this region, they are more regularly impacting and attacking people and livestock," Mr Ingram said.

"The current government control and education program appears to be limited and there is mounting community concern at the lack of action dealing with this pest.

"I believe that the government needs to take a concerted action to address the impact of European wasps including funding.

  • an education program highlighting the dangers of the wasps;
  • a program to identify and destroy wasp nests particularly around towns; and
  • further research to identify a control strategy or potential biological control agent."

Mr Ingram said residents should be mindful that European wasps are aggressive and their nests should be avoided.

"Unlike bees, European wasps can sting multiple times," Mr Ingram said.

"If a nest is disturbed, the wasps release a scent which calls for other wasps to defend the nest.

"Anyone finding a nest should report it immediately to council or the DSE," Mr Ingram concluded.
