Inverloch Talks Climate Change

Bass Coast Shire Council wants residents and businesses at Inverloch to be part of a study into how their climate-adapted community will look in 20 years.

By Bass Coast - 30th March 2012 - Back to News

Council is hoping interested residents will join a Local Advisory Group for the study, which will also focus on the Sandy Point community.

The research project, funded by the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility, aims to understand how small-town coastal communities will look in 2030 because of climate-adaptation. Inverloch and Sandy Point have been chosen as the focus.

Dr Janet Stanley, Chief Research Officer at the Monash Sustainability Institute, said the Sandy Point and Inverloch Advisory Groups will represent the views of their local community and suggest how they would like use the findings of the study.

"Ability to adapt to climate change will depend on many factors - personal, social, psychological, environmental and economic - but also the specific climate event, where you live, planning and preparation, and government policy. By including the local communities in the discussion about climate change they are able to have a say on decisions made by local authorities that will impact them," Dr Stanley said.

Members of the Advisory Groups will take part in a number of workshops and provide their views on different climate change scenarios that will affect their community.

The 12-month project is being led by Monash University in conjunction with the South Gippsland and Bass Coast Shire Councils, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Gippsland Climate Change Network. It is due for completion by March 2013.
