Electricity Usage In The Face Of Climate Change – Document Your Story On Film

Latrobe City Council in conjunction with SP AusNet, is organising a short film competition as part of ‘The Grid’ project, the final exciting element of Latrobe’s ‘Green Expectations’ project.

The competition aims to explore the complex issues regarding our connection to the electricity grid and how we use electricity in the face of a growing awareness within our communities of the effects of climate change.

Latrobe City Council’s Green Expectations creative director, Alison Taylor, said that the competition is an Australia-wide competition for short-film makers to create a work that explores this contentious issue.

"While debate regarding the environment continues, the electricity grid presents a paradox for our society. Electricity provides us with many of the things which contribute to the comfortable life we enjoy; on the other hand the carbon emitted through coal-based power generation contributes to climate change which may ultimately take away some of the very things we value about the way we live.

"We’re inviting all budding film makers to get creative and make a short film documenting their experiences of this issue. The competition is open to schools, tertiary educational establishments and the wider community through the open section. Prize money of between $1000 and $4000 is up for grabs for the winners of each category. Films, of up to ten minutes’ duration, can be submitted in any form, such as animation, digital story-telling, documentary, on DVD by 31 July," Ms Taylor explained.

"Film makers may explore the many themes that arise from ‘The Grid’ such as the role the Latrobe Valley plays as the heart of energy generation in Victoria; the dynamics of electricity grid; our reliance on electricity in our daily lives; climate change impacts. Schools and community groups are encouraged to work with professionals to develop their ideas. Anyone interested in connecting with film professionals in the development of their films should contact the Creative Director for more information on 03 5128 5713.

"As well as the cash prizes all films will be considered for opportunities for state-wide screenings, screening at the ‘SP AusNet Short Film Festival’ in Gippsland and inclusion in other ‘Green Expectations’ projects. Prize winners will be informed no later than 17 August 2009. A panel of local and national artists, project sponsor and local electricity distributor SP AusNet, and filmmakers will judge the submissions," Ms Taylor said.

Submissions should take the form of a DVD and any other supporting material that you feel is needed. Dual copyright will be held on films submitted. Films should be no longer than 10 minutes. All submissions should be received no later than 31 July 2009.

Entries should be sent to Amanda Owen, cultural liveability officer, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264, Morwell, Victoria 3840.
