Governments Work Together To Help Business

Bass Coast Shire Council is working with the Victorian Government to improve services for business owners.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th July 2007 - Back to News

Business owners can now log on to Council’s website and access information from key federal, state and local government agencies.

All the information is designed to help business owners start, run and grow their business.

"With improved regulatory information and services all in one place, business owners will have more time to run their business," said Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin.

"Businesses will be able to manage their compliance obligations, registration, licenses and permits.

"They will also be able to interact with both the State Government and Council directly, and get answers faster.

"It’s so easy that even I can use it," Cr Goodwin said.

Cr Goodwin also said that business owners without access to the internet could visit any of the local libraries.

"All our libraries now offer free broadband internet access, including the mobile library," said Cr Goodwin.

The Australian Tax Office, WorkCover, the State Revenue Office, Consumer Affairs Victoria and the Small Business Commissioner are just some of the agencies currently involved. More agencies will join the project in the coming months.

Business owners simply need to visit www.basscoast.vic.gov.au, look under the Business in Bass Coast heading on the home page, and click on Step-by-Step guides.

"Having the scope to explore across government from a central location reduces the confusion that small businesses have often cited as a time consuming problem," Cr Goodwin continued.

"Step-by-Step guides provide help for common business issues, including general business management, supply chain management, workplace safety, working with suppliers, and staffing management.

"There is an Ask a Question service designed to offer one place for businesses to ask questions, online or by phone, rather than searching across many websites or calling numerous phone numbers.

"Drawing on information gathered from across government, most questions can be answered immediately, with more complex questions directed to an account manager for rapid response," said Cr Goodwin.

For more information contact Council’s Economic Development team on 1300 BCOAST (1300 226 278).

By simply logging on, phoning up, or walking in, businesses can:

  • Search across Government: federal, state and local.
  • Find licences: gather information on all government licences, permits, registrations and codes of practice for any business.
  • Use the Step-by-Step guides: use interactive guides to learn about topics including How to Register Your Business, Setting Up Business Premises, and Tax and Financial Management. Simply follow the prompts to build a personalised To Do list.
  • Ask a Question: if a question cannot be answered immediately, it will be escalated to an account manager and answered within 48 hours.
  • Find a contact: get the right contact for a particular topic.
