Changes to immunisation schedule announced

Parents of children turning 18-months-old are advised by Latrobe City Council that the 18-month dose of the Diphtheria-Tetanus-Acellular Pertussis (DTPa) Vaccine is not required This announcement follows changes to the National Immunisation Program

By Latrobe City Council - 2nd October 2003 - Back to News

According to Council’s Health Services Manager, Andrew Mackintosh, the infant 18-month DTPa vaccine for protection against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough is no longer necessary.

"The decision to remove the 18-month dose of DTPa vaccine was based on international scientific studies, which showed that childhood vaccinations at 2,4, and 6 months provide sufficient immunity against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis until the next recommended booster dose at 4 years of age," Mr Mackintosh explained.

"Although this dose is no longer funded under the National Immunisation Program, arrangements for Child Care Benefit and the Maternity Immunisation Allowance will not change. Parents can still claim the Maternity Immunisation Allowance after their child turns 18 months of age so long as their child is up-to-date for the 12-month vaccinations," Mr Mackintosh said.

"Latrobe City Council will be implementing the change to the National Immunisation Program schedule at its immunisation sessions in October 2003," Mr Mackintosh concluded.
