Strength-Led Transition Gets A Boost
Latrobe City Council’s community led transition document today received welcome support following the Victorian National’s support for a High Energy Low Emission Brown Coal Power Generator to be built in the Latrobe Valley.
Mayor Cr Kellie O’Callaghan said that since December 2016 Council’s Strength-Led Transition has called for the development of a zero emissions Brown Coal Power Generator to be established in the Latrobe Valley."The vision of our community was given further bolstering in February 2017 when the Prime Minister during his address to the National Press Council called for the development of a High Efficiency Low Emission power station to secure Australia’s based load power needs.
Cr O’Callaghan said that today’s announcement was a further vote of confidence in the community of the Latrobe Valley, its ingenuity and engineering expertise.
"We have been calling for the development of this critical utility infrastructure in the Latrobe City since December 2016.
"I welcome the Victorian National Party’s support for our position.
"Our community is perfectly placed to embrace this opportunity and we stand here – as a skilled, experienced and committed community – ready to breathe life into this initiative.
"Council believes that the municipality’s vast brown coal resources are a unique competitive advantage and that this should be utilised for the benefit of all Victorians.
"Energy security, energy prices, energy reliability – we hear about them every day. Here in the Latrobe Valley we can give energy security, we can lower power bills – we just need the investment, policy settings and political will to make it happen.
"Our region is resource-rich with significant supplies of brown coal, with an experienced workforce, with infrastructure already in place to offer energy security to the state.
"Latrobe City has a workforce, knowledge, experience and skill to enable a new power station to be operational expeditiously.
"Together with Carbon Capture Storage we could have new secure base-load power with no emissions," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
"Of course there is a role for renewable energy – this does not need to be mutually exclusive. We’d love to be the home of all energy – innovative brown coal energy and state of the art renewable energy.
