By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th May 2007 - Back to News

This is part of a Community Safety Day coordinated by Bass Coast Shire Council and supported by South Gippsland Roadsafe.

Council’s Community Safety Manager, Peter Laydon said local business Phillip Island Service Centre will be conducting the checks.

"The day will provide the community with an opportunity to bring their vehicle along and have a free safety check before the wet winter months."

Included in the free safety check will be:

  • Tyre safety
  • Brakes
  • Lights
  • Steering
  • Windscreens and wipers

Also on display will be a CFA fire truck, CES Emergency 1 unit, RAV Ambulance and two new Police candy pursuit vehicles.

"Bring friends and family along and ensure your car is safe for the winter months," encouraged Mr Laydon.

"It will be an enjoyable day for all, with plenty to see and do."

This Community Safety Day was coordinated as part of Council’s Road Safety Strategy.

COWES RIDING SCHOOL BUS LAUNCHED

The Cowes Riding School Bus was launched on Friday May 4 at the Cowes Primary School.

The Riding School Bus operates as part of Bass Coast Shire Council’s Walking School Bus Program.

Volunteers ride along a set route, picking up or dropping off student cyclists at their stops, escorting children to and from school.

Council’s Walking School Bus Facilitator, Don Turner said the Bus was a healthy, safe, cost effective, enjoyable and sustainable way for students to travel to and from school.

"The Cowes Riding School Bus will operate on Thursdays and Fridays.

"It is a credit to the school that the volunteers have come forward to operate this. There is scope to extend the program to other parts of Cowes, as other families see the benefits."

Mr Turner said there are many benefits to walking and cycling to school.

"Apart from the immediate improvement in fitness, there are long-term health benefits for kids,"

"There is also less traffic around schools as the streets are re-claimed by pedestrians and cyclists,"

Mr Turner said there is also a social benefit for the students.

Council’s Walking School Bus Program is jointly funded by VicHealth, Bass Coast Shire Council and RoadSafe. If you are interested in being a Riding School Bus volunteer or would like more information, please contact Council’s Walking School Bus Facilitator, Don Turner on 5671 2704.
