Ingram Slams Coalition Marine Park Investigation

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, said that marine parks were are back on the agenda following a commitment released today by the coalition.

In an extraordinary statement, the coalition environment spokesperson Mary Wooldridge has announced that a re-elected coalition government would have the Victorian Environment Assessment Council investigate marine parks.

From a Liberal/National party press release issued today, the coalition has stated it will have VEAC ‘Examine the outcomes from the establishment of existing marine parks and any ongoing biodiversity threats or challenges… the Coalition will ensure that VEAC can continue its vital role in the protection of Victoria’s diverse habitats and the sustainable management of our land, parks and coastal and marine life’.

"VEAC and its predecessors have never investigated anything without recommending new or expanded parks or reserves and this investigation if allowed to be conducted will be no different," Mr Ingram said.

"This new Liberal/ National policy is just a blank cheque for the VNPA and the Greens to shut down estuaries and more coastal and marine waters to recreational and commercial fishing.

"The Gippsland Lakes, Mallacoota Inlet, Gabo Island and areas like Bemm River have already been earmarked by the VNPA to further expand the existing marine park areas to 25-30% of victorias coast and inlets.

"We have already seen the fluffy, feel-good television advertising from the VNPA about protecting our coasts and the coalition appears to have brought this media spin hook, line and sinker.

"Recreational anglers and commercial fishers must join me and stand up against this stupidity. "The coalition is saying different things to different groups, but this statement from the coalition makes it clear that the push to expand and create marine parks is certainly back on the agenda and the coalition is leading the charge," Mr Ingram said.
