Government Support To Help Latrobe Valley Businesses Focus On The Future

The Victorian Government is working with Latrobe Valley businesses that supply the power industry, to prepare them for any negative impacts from the Federal Government‟s carbon tax.

By Russell Northe - 22nd February 2012 - Back to News

Small Business Victoria will link businesses likely to be affected with dedicated specialists from the Small Business Mentoring Service and Industry Capability Network. This free service will help businesses to identify opportunities and restructuring options.

Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Member for Morwell Russell Northe said it is not yet clear which specific Latrobe Valley businesses will be affected by the operation of the carbon tax and in what way.

"However, anecdotal evidence and experience from previous economic transitions indicates that through preparing early and thinking outside the box, opportunities can be identified that may otherwise be missed.

"Latrobe Valley businesses are resilient and innovative, and the Victorian Government wants to ensure that they are ready to capitalise on those opportunities," Mr Northe said.

Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood said businesses in the region should learn now what affect the carbon tax would have on them and begin to put strategies in place.

"Many small businesses in Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley are in a unique position to take advantage of this free service and small businesses should use that to their advantage,‟ said Mr Blackwood.

„The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to supporting our small businesses and I encourage any business that qualifies for the service to make contact‟, Mr Blackwood said.

The Small Business Mentoring Service (SBMS) is a not-for-profit organisation that works with the Victorian Government, to improve the sustainability of small businesses. To date, SBMS has assisted over 15,000 Victorian small businesses. Its experienced mentors have backgrounds in marketing, sales, finance, manufacturing, retailing, franchising, tourism and other business management fields.

The Industry Capability Network (ICN) helps businesses access local and international project opportunities, by matching their capability with the requirements of purchasers, project managers and procurement managers. The ICN has more than 25 years‟ experience and a database of over 50,000 companies.

For more information about the program and to register your participation, business people should call the Small Business Mentoring Service on (03) 9879 4486.
