Writing Like a Wild Thing in Sale

Well-known Gippsland author Scot Gardiner speaks and writes with raw honesty, candid humour and irresistible energy – now he wants to inspire others to do the same.

By Wellington Shire Council - 19th July 2005 - Back to News

Wellington Shire Council is pleased to present `Writing Like a Wild Thing – a (free) workshop with Scot Gardiner’’ for budding authors at Sale Library on Monday, 25 July from 1.45-2.30pm.

Scot’s funny and cheeky writing style makes his books a popular, enjoyable read for primary and secondary school aged readers. Scot's list of works include his first novel One Dead Seagull - a tale of the trials and turmoil of boyhood - and The Other Madonna - a novel for slightly older readers, about piercings, pizzas and the healing power of love.

The author will also be conducting workshops with local school children on 26 and 27 July.

The workshops run for 45 minutes and in that time Scot discusses the idea of using personal narrative (our own stories) as a spring-board into gripping fiction.

Scot Gardiner said: "The primary focus of the workshop is to strengthen the writer’s understanding and use of authentic detail in a piece, the ‘show, don’t tell’ axiom that drives good writing and separating the writing processes into creating the story and editing it."

The author, who lives near Yinnar in a solar-powered barn with his wife and three children, has been a counsellor, masseur and hypnotherapist. He currently works as an education consultant, landscape designer/builder, didgeridoo player and author.

He describes his writing process to be "a lot like rifling through lives to find the treasures".

Wellington’s Deputy Mayor Jeff Amos said: "Authors like Scot are a great role model for our budding young writers and readers across the shire, by encouraging them to develop their reading and writing skills and explore their imagination.

"The council is delighted to be able to bring an ongoing program of visiting authors to the shire through its library service."
